Systems Financing for Climate Smart Smallholder Agriculture

By , Glenn Yago

The Smallholder Action Coalition for Climate Adaptation’s (SACCA) goal is to engage and support 30
million smallholder farmers to transform how they adapt to climate change over the next 10 years.
Towards this goal, the SACCA team asked the Milken Innovation Center to convene a Financial
Innovations Lab to explore what is needed, how best practices could be deployed to meet these needs
and chart a pathway forward to solutions that can leverage new investment and enhance resilience
among smallholder farming communities.
The Lab was held in Abu Dhabi in December 2023 among 40 practitioners and thought leaders in
smallholder farmer finance and development. This report from the Lab describes a systems financing
approach and model to address the needs for scalable and sustainable climate smart agriculture
among smallholder farmers.
